Barroso gives the government 5 days to adopt the necessary measures for disappearances in the AM

the minister Luis Roberto Barroso of Federal Court of Justice determined, this Friday (10), that the federal government adopt “all necessary measures” to find journalist Dom Phillips and indigenist Bruno Pereira, who disappeared in Vale do Javari, in amazon since Sunday (5).

Barroso also determined that the government adopt “all the necessary measures to guarantee security in the place” and present, within five days, a report containing all the measures adopted and information obtained.

The minister ordered a daily fine of R$100,000 to be applied in case of non-compliance with his decision.

“This disappearance constitutes a public and notorious fact, reported by national and international media. The shortcomings of the Union’s actions in protecting the life and health of indigenous people are also the subject of repeated decisions by this Rapporteur”, stated Barroso.

The minister also stated that effective action by the State is necessary so that the Amazon does not become a “land without law”.

“Without effective and determined action by the Brazilian State, the Amazon will progressively fall into a situation of anomie, of land without law. It is necessary to reorder the priorities of the country in this matter”, he justified.

Barroso’s decision came after the manifestation of the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Apib) in a lawsuit that is being processed in the STF on the health and safety of indigenous peoples.
