Barroso should support nursing floor, but question Congress about source of funds

The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Luís Roberto Barroso, who suspended the nursing floor, must tell the president of Congress, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) at this Tuesday’s meeting (6) that he supports the payment to the category, but that Congress needs to point out where the funds will come from.

The dialogue comes amid criticism directed at the STF after the decision on the floor and on the eve of 7 September.

According to interlocutors, in the conversation with Pacheco, Barroso intends to compare the situation of nurses with the readjustment of the teachers’ salary floor, which required the creation of the Fund for the Maintenance and Development of Basic Education and for the Valorization of Education Professionals (Fundeb) to make the payment possible.

Barroso will receive Pacheco at the STF at 3 pm. And then, at 6 pm, he will meet with a delegation of federal deputies led by parliamentarian Carmen Zanotto (Citizenship-SC), who is also a trained nurse. Throughout the year, Zanotto chaired a working group that discussed the values of the floor and possible sources of funds.

THE CNN , congressmen said that Congress will try to convince the STF that there will be priority in approving payment sources. On the list of options, there is the project that regulates gambling, which divides opinions.

For Zanotto, other more viable initiatives are more likely to be approved this month, such as payroll tax relief projects and the use of state-owned resources. “We understand the minister’s concern, but this is a historical issue. Nurses have been fighting for the salary floor for 30 years. The pandemic gave more visibility to nursing. In 2020, they went to the front lines.”
