Bars and restaurants lay off 20% of employees amid wave of Covid and flu

With the new wave of Covid-19 and the rise in influenza cases, several sectors of the economy face problems due to the contagion among workers.

The Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants (Abrasel) reported that 20% of the employees of the establishments are removed every week due to records of infection.

According to the data, for every ten employees who perform tests, three test positive for Covid-19. This makes entrepreneurs analyze the possibility of future restrictions, both in terms of opening hours and the presence of the public.

Another heavily affected sector is transport. Bus companies in the city of São Paulo identified a 35% increase in medical dismissals, which includes not only drivers and collectors, but also maintenance teams.

The tourism and entertainment sector also suffers from this scenario. This when considering that the month of January, the time of travel and tours, moves the area a lot.

However, new event cancellations are also being studied. The guidance of entrepreneurs in the sector and local health authorities for the time being is to maintain the events, but intensifying the care already known, such as the use of mask, social distance and alcohol in gel.
