Bashar al-Assad has ruled Syria for 21 years, recently he was re-elected for another seven years: the outcome of the elections

Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad was re-elected for a fourth seven-year term in the country’s presidential elections, which were held on May 26 and which are not recognizedist democratic world. According to the local agency SANA, 55-year-old Assad won with 95.1% of the vote.

 

Assad has been in power for 21 years.

The rivals of the Syrian leader were socialist Abdullah Sallum Abdullah and opposition leader Mahmoud Marai. Their indicators are 1.5% and 3.3%, respectively. According to the authorities, the turnout was almost 79%.

On the streets in Syria before the elections:

  • In 2000, Bashar al-Assad replaced his father Hazef Assad (reigned since 1971) in this position when he died of a heart attack.
  • During the civil war in Syria, government forces have used chemical weapons (usually sarin and chlorine) against opposition forces dozens of times.
  • In 2020, Khaddam, the predecessor of Bashar al-Assad as the leader of Syria, died in exile.
  • The uncle of Bashar al-Assad, known as “Hama’s butcher”, was sentenced to prison in France.
