A survey by HORUS/FGV IBRE pointed out that 7 of the 8 most populous capitals in Brazil had an increase in the average value of the basic food consumption basket in December.
Brasília had the biggest increase, 14.9%, followed by Manaus, with 7.8%, and Fortaleza, with 6.8%. The only one that had a price reduction was Belo Horizonte, with a retraction of 2.7%.
In an interview with CNN Rádio, the director of new business at Horus Inteligência de Mercado, Luiza Zacharias said that the survey takes into account 22 products, such as beans, rice, soy oil, milk, beef, pork, vegetables and fruits.
According to her, “several factors” led to the increase in December.
“There was a crop failure due to weather problems, we had aspects related to energy in general, due to the water crisis, tariff increases, impacting food production, we have the issue of rising oil prices, which also impacts the supply chain. of inputs and the issue of the dollar, when it is higher, impacts commodity prices.”
Even in the face of this situation, the expectation, for Luiza, is that production costs will be “cooled down a little”, with the arrival of the rains, the prospect of improvement and increase in the harvests, which increases the offer and gives “an accommodation in the prices.”
However, she points out that “we live in times of constant uncertainty, since the coronavirus, which generates instability and insecurity, and even political issues, is an election year.”
