Bat attacks during the summer represented 71% of cases in PR in 2024

With the arrival of summer and the increase in temperatures, the State Department of Health (Sesa) of Paraná issued a warning about the risk of transmission of anger put bats . The species’ reproductive season intensifies its activity, making the accidental entry of these animals into homes and urban areas more frequent, increasing contact with humans and domestic animals.

Data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (Sinan) show that 41.6% of assaults by bats They occur between December and March, with peaks in January and February.

In 2023, the difference between rabies treatments in January/February and May was 83%, a similar pattern to that in 2024, with a difference of 71% in the same period. Sesa recommends avoiding any interaction with bats living or dead, especially those that exhibit unusual behavior, such as daytime activity.

What to do in case of attack

THE anger the main disease transmitted by saliva through bites scratches or contact with mucous membranes, is a serious and, in most cases, lethal disease.

In case of direct contact with bats the recommendation is to wash the wound with soap and water and seek immediate medical attention. If you find a bat at home, isolate the area or contain the animal and contact the Municipal Health Department.

Sesa also reinforces the importance of annual rabies vaccination for dogs and cats, even those that do not have access to the street.
