Batman, Robin Comes Out: Dating a Boy

A boy invites him out and he accepts: in the latest Batman comic (Batman, Urban legend), Robin – a young friend and pupil of the hero – discovers he is bisexual. And so, in the Batman family created by DC Comics, it becomes the second to be part of the LGBTQ world, after Batwoman, who is openly lesbian.

Here is the situation. Robin / Tim Drake (the third incarnation of Robin) has just finished the fight to save his friend Bernard Dowd from a villain and wonders: “People kept asking me what I want.

But I couldn’t understand it. Whatever it was, it always seemed out of reach. Until now. Until now”. And when Robin finds himself alone with Bernard, he proposes: “Tim Drake, do you want to go out with me?“. His answer: “Yes, yes. I think I want to».

Meghan Fitzmartin, author of the comic, explains that she has no intention of labeling Drake’s sexuality: “We needed a story that was one of identity and discovery.” It’s still: “Tim hasn’t put a label on himself yet. Nor does this story de-legitimize his ten-year relationship with fellow superhero Stephanie Brown, “he says in an interview with Polygon. “I wanted to pay homage to the fact that sexuality is a journey. To be clear, his feelings for Stephanie were / are 100% real, as were his feelings for Bernard. However, Tim is still trying to understand himself».

Drake is just the latest in a series of superheroes that are part of the LGBTQ world. There are also Batwoman, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, the married couple Midnighter and Apollo, and most recently at Marvel, Captain America.
