Battle for Donbass is one of Europe’s most brutal battles, says Zelensky

The battle for the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine “will surely go down in military history as one of the most brutal battles in Europe and for Europe,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a speech on Monday. .

This comes after Ukrainian military officials said earlier in the day that their troops had been pulled away from the city center of Severodonetsk, which along with its twin city Lysychansk is at the center of the current battle for what is still under Ukrainian control in the Luhansk region. in eastern Donbass, Ukraine.

Authorities also said that three major bridges linking Severodonetsk to Lysychansk are now impassable for vehicles, meaning supply routes and evacuations via these routes are impossible.

Zelensky said the Ukrainians face the “significant advantage of the Russians in the amount of equipment and especially artillery systems”.

“The price of this battle for us is very high. It’s just scary. And we draw the attention of our partners daily to the fact that only a sufficient number of modern artillery for Ukraine will guarantee our advantage and ultimately an end to Russian torture of the Ukrainian Donbass,” he added.

Zelensky said a boy was killed on Monday by Russian bombing in the battle for Lysychansk.

“That’s it: a 6-year-old boy on Moskovska Street is also, as it turned out, a dangerous enemy for the Russian Federation,” he said.
