Industry: Vertical Cultivation – Farmvent
Farms of size 2 by 1.5 m, where aromatic plants are grown in hotel restaurants and supermarkets. The result; Basil, mint, mint etc. fresher than ever and in fact in countries of Northern Europe, where in the absence of sun, these plants do not find … suitable soil. This is what Farmvent, founded by Nikolaos, Orpheus and Vasiliki, is doing.
The idea of Farmvent started in 2018, while the company, which operates in a pilot phase based in the Netherlands, was founded in April 2021. It has an ally in vertical farming, which, although not known to everyone, is the new trend in food production. After all, with urbanization expected to reach 80% of the population by 2050, vertical farming is not just a fad, but a necessity for the future.
Farmvent presents an automated way of producing aromatic plants and vegetables, which is carried out using a new robotic approach combining methods of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (machine learning).
The aim is to reduce food miles and food waste as well as the delivery of safe products that have not come into contact with foreign organizations. This is achieved through specially designed “automated vendors” from which the customer selects and buys the plant he desires.
Nikolaos Alfieris, is the founder and CEO of Farmvent, with postgraduate studies in Biosystems Engineering and Management Economics, at Wageningen University & Research, where the company is based. The part of plant research and cultivation has been undertaken by Orpheus Voutsinos-Frantzis, PhD candidate in the Horticultural Laboratory of the Agricultural University of Athens, specializing in applied physiology and plant nutrition in vertical crops. The third member, Vasiliki Marami, in charge of the administrative department, became a member of the team at the beginning of her postgraduate studies in International Management at the University of Utrecht.
The team, with studies at the above top universities, has participated in several innovation competitions, where it has been distinguished, as well as in voluntary activities in Greece and the Netherlands. Funding from Starthub Wageningen, the entrepreneurship incubator at Wageningen University & Research, has played an important role in the development of Farmvent.
