The Central Bank released this Tuesday (22) the Regional Bulletin with data showing the evolution of economic activity in each region of the country in the fourth quarter of 2021, compared to the third quarter of last year.
According to the BC, activity in the North dropped 1.0% from October to December compared to the period from July to September.
Likewise, there was a retraction of 0.4% in the index for the Southeast region in the last quarter of last year.
The Northeast and South regions presented growth of only 0.3% in the period. The Midwest, on the other hand, recorded a 0.9% increase in activity at the end of 2021.
“Recent information on economic activity indicates accommodation at the margin in the fourth quarter of 2021, with divergence of results between sectors of the Brazilian economy”, highlighted the monetary authority.
According to the bulletin, industrial production showed stability in November and recovery in December, driven by the performance of the automotive industry.
The services sector maintained a positive trajectory in the quarter, still influenced by the recovery of the segments most affected by the pandemic.
“On the other hand, commerce registered a new quarterly retraction, reflecting a drop in the real income of families, in a scenario of high inflation and inflationary surprises partially associated with supply shocks, and possible shift of spending to services”, the document found.
“Agriculture, with a still positive outlook for 2022, was hit by adverse weather conditions in the south of the country, with negative effects on forecasts for the harvest of soybeans and first-crop corn.”
Regions
According to the BC, the weak performance of the North in the fourth quarter evidenced the cooling of activity in the region in the second half of last year. In the accumulated of 2021, however, there was still a growth of 2.9%, after a retraction of 0.6% in 2020.
The bulletin highlights the expansion of activities in Pará (1.7%) and Amazonas (5.0%), driven by the recovery of the trade and services sectors throughout 2021.
Despite the improvement in services, the retraction in activity in the Southeast at the end of 2021 was caused by the low dynamism of industry and commerce in the region.
In the accumulated of last year, the Southeast indicator grew 4.4%, after a retraction of 2.8% in 2020.
Even at a slow pace, the positive evolution of the Northeast was due to the performance of the manufacturing industry, reflecting the continued recovery of the oil refining activity and the non-metallic minerals segment.
In the opposite direction, there was a retraction of services and commerce. In the accumulated of 2021, the activity indicator in the region grew 3.0%, after retraction of 3.5% in 2020.
With a similar result in the last quarter of the year, the South region showed accommodation in the scenario of activity recovery.
While there was an advance in industrial production and agriculture, trade and services contributed to the slowdown at the margin. In 2021, activity in the region grew 6.0%, after a 3.5% drop in the previous year.
The Midwest recorded the best performance among the regions in the last quarter of last year with good results from the manufacturing and agriculture industry, after retractions in these activities in the previous quarter.
The BC also highlights the contribution of the service sector and civil construction in the period. Year-to-date, activity in the region increased by 3.4%, after a retraction of 1.2% in 2020.
