BC launches two coins to commemorate 200 years of Brazilian Independence; Look

The Central Bank (BC) launched this Tuesday (26) two coins to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Independence of Brazil. According to the institution, initially there will be 5,000 silver coins and 10,000 cupronickel coins. However, the print run can go up to 20,000 units of silver and 40,000 of cupronickel.

Both coins have the 1st stanza of the national anthem on the reverse, along with national symbols such as the colors green and yellow and the Brazilian flag, and historical scenes that depict moments of independence on the obverse.

The president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, participated in the launch and highlighted the independence of Brazil as “a historic moment”, which “consolidated the will of Brazilians to constitute an independent, free and sovereign nation.

“We understand that looking with pride at the past, recognizing our achievements, helps us project the future. It is in this sense, with commemorative coins, that the Central Bank celebrates, together with all Brazilians, the 200th anniversary of the date on which we became a nation.”, said Campos Neto.

The cupronickel coin shows the Grito da Independência, in which D. Pedro I, upon receiving letters from the princess and the minister José Bonifácio, proclaims the Independence of Brazil, on the banks of the Ipiranga River. The item depicts the image of the painting Independência ou Morte, by Pedro Américo, on the obverse. On the reverse, the colors green and yellow, chosen by D. Pedro I shortly after Independence, appear in a moving band. It is the first time that the color feature will be used in a Brazilian currency.

“The silver coin is a composition of images. In the foreground we have the bust of D. Pedro I, an iconic character of Independence. We used part of the lithograph D. Pedro I Emperor, by Sebatien Sisson. In the background, the painting Session of the Council of State, by Georgina de Albuquerque, is portrayed”, detailed BC Administration director Carolina Barros. The Council of State session portrays the episode in which the decision was taken to send letters to D. Pedro advising him to break with the Portuguese Crown.

With a face value of BRL 5.00, the silver coin will sell for BRL 420.00. The cupronickel units will have a face value of R$ 2.00, with a sale price of R$ 34.00. Both coins are now available for purchase and can be purchased on the Clube da Medalha da Casa da Moeda do Brasil website.
