“Be smart and get out of town if you can,” says Ukrainian mayor of Boryspil

As Ukrainian forces celebrate what they say is the recapture of a town west of Kiev, the mayor of a town east of the capital is urging residents to leave.

Volodymyr Borysenko said in a video that there was fighting in the Kiev region, where Boryspil is located.

“There is no need to be in the city right now as there is already fighting going on in the surrounding area. I invite the civilian population to be smart, contact our call center and leave town as soon as an opportunity arises,” he stated.

Borysenko said authorities will help evacuate those who do not have their own vehicles, adding that there are almost daily transfers to western Ukraine, where Russian attacks have been much smaller.

“As practice shows, in cities where combat is taking place, the fewer civilians in the city, the easier it is for the (Ukraine) armed forces to operate,” the mayor said.

According to the United Nations, at least 10 million people have fled their homes after the invasion of Russia, which began nearly four weeks ago.

That number represents almost a quarter of the country’s population, estimated at 44 million by the World Bank in 2020.

Of those who have left their homes, the majority – around 6.5 million, according to figures provided by the International Organization for Migration – have been internally displaced since the conflict began on 24 February.
