BEA: From the cooperation of Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Hungary and Romania, the most suitable model of nutritional labeling will be found

In the creation of an integrated European initiative that will improve the nutritional behavior of consumers, the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and the Chamber of Commerce of Athens are moving forward, welcoming this mobilization of the Ministers of Rural Development of five EU member countries: Greece, of Italy, Cyprus, Hungary and Romania.

The aim is the adoption of nutritional labeling on the front of the food packaging, harmonized with the nutritional content of each food.

The BEA in its announcement notes that for Greece, it is important that the single scheme being promoted does not cause unjustified discrimination of foods, with potential negative effects on the nutritional classification of certain emblematic Greek products (e.g. olive oil, olives, feta cheese, strained yogurt , honey, etc.).

As stated by the general secretary of the BEA, Ioannis Manos: “this is a particularly important development, which protects consumers on the one hand, based on their eating habits, and tens of thousands of small and medium-sized businesses on the other. As he has pointed out, many times, the BEA through the “Initiative” of the producers, it is necessary to adopt a fair evaluation system for food products and at the same time provide more complete information to consumers to adopt better habits in the context of a healthy diet.

The announcement also notes that, after Greece’s cooperation with four European countries, the basic principles developed by the national “Initiative” of dozens of agencies, coordinated by the BEA, are confirmed, namely:

* The need for nutrition education so that citizens can make informed choices, tailored to their personal needs and circumstances

* Examining each food as part of the wider context of the daily requirements of a healthy diet

* Respect for the nutritional culture and typical diets of each member state, avoiding discrimination against traditional foods, which play a positive role in nutrition, provided they are consumed in the right amount.

The BEA and the “Initiative” believe that through transnational cooperation and the awareness of the countries (Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Hungary and Romania), the most appropriate model will eventually be found, so that the harmonized scheme that will be chosen will provide the correct information to the consumer, about the nutritional content of the food, providing the possibility to make informed, healthy and sustainable choices and above all, to treat food production companies equally.

“The Chamber of Commerce of Athens and the “Initiative” remain, from the first moment, at the disposal of the competent minister, Mr. Georgantas, so that we can support this important national effort with all the means and know-how at our disposal and to inform the Greeks appropriately consumers”, said the president Pavlos Ravanis.
