Three words that a crowd of bathers in Florida, in the United States, did not expect to hear during Sunday (11) in the sun: “It’s a bear!”
A bear was seen in the Gulf of Mexico near Destin, a coastal city in the Panhandle region of northwest Florida, just before noon local time. “We watched him for several minutes coming from afar,” sunbather Chris Barron told the CNN . “Most people didn’t realize it was a bear.”
Barron took out his phone and started recording as several people walked across the ocean. A man was just a few meters away from the bear when he began to swim and shake the water from his fur. In the video, a child is heard shouting the warning as the bear runs towards the sand. “The crowd was in shock,” Barron said.
Florida resident Steffani Saddler was on a boat returning from diving when she too spotted the unknown figure in the water. “We didn’t know what it was, so we turned the boat around to get closer and that’s when we realized it was a bear,” Saddler told reporters. CNN .
The bear is seen floating in the water, slowly drifting to shore covered in blue umbrellas as people enjoy a day at the beach. “I think he’s on vacation too,” joked Saddler. She said the bear made it safely to shore and then fled.
“I’ve lived here all my life and I’ve never seen anything like this before,” she told CNN .
It is unclear at this time where the bear came from or its current location. A CNN has reached out to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) for comment.
