Beautiful about life behind bars: “From day to night, I had nothing left”

Named after “Beautiful, Too Close to the Light” the singer’s documentary series reached the catalog of Globoplay this Thursday (28), presenting the public with epic moments from his career in music and, consequently, the hooks of his personal life.

Among the highlights, the production focuses on the period in which the pagodeiro lived behind bars . In total, the singer has been arrested three times since 2002.

The first took place in June of that year, under suspicion of involvement with drug traffickers. At the time, he spent 37 days at the Anti-Kidnapping Police Station (DAS).

In November 2004, the singer was arrested again – this time in his home, after being sentenced to eight years in a closed regime for the crimes of drug trafficking and association for drug trafficking. The right to parole was only granted in 2007.

“Anyone who is a popular artist knows that they have to talk to everyone. His big mistake [Belo] was giving his home phone number to a drug dealer. He knows he made a mistake”, stated Alfredo Santana, the musician’s current manager, during the recordings.

“Having spoken on the phone, for a very short time, with this guy [traficante] it was the biggest mistake made in my life”, added Belo.

“We were born to belong to the world, what I experienced was very bad, very sad. I had everything and, at the same time, I had nothing else. From day to night, I had nothing left. You find yourself imprisoned, in a space ten meters away, without being able to leave whenever you want, without being able to speak. This is horrible. I wouldn’t even wish it on my worst enemy”, assured the pagodeiro in the series.

Belo also described the feeling when leaving the place. “In fact, you can come and go wherever you want, whenever you want, it’s fantastic. There’s no money to pay for that. [Podem] Offer to live what I lived and be a trillionaire, I don’t want to. I want to be tough, but be able to go out, do what I want, be able to breathe.”

“I raised some birds when I lived in [condomínio] Maramar, when the morning arrived, I sang and so did the bird. When this problem happened to me, the first thing I did was open the cage and let everything out, I will never let a bird sing when trapped again. I think it’s horrible. The saddest thing in the world”, he admitted.

However, in 2021, during the Covid pandemic, he was quickly detained again on the grounds of having promoted crowding at a show at Complexo da Maré, in Rio de Janeiro.

The singer was released after obtaining a habeas corpus, as the Court understood that there was no need for preventive detention.
