Blue Monday, that is to say “the most depressing day of the year”. This is how the third Monday of January is defined and although there is no scientific basis that attests to how much this day is actually the saddest of 365, even a specific Wikipedia page was born on the subject.
Although there is no supporting research, therefore, the idea that this is the most disheartening Monday of all would be determined by various factors: the holidays are over for a while, the temperatures are low (and remain so), the sun makes you want, the next real holiday seems light years away.
The only real advantage of this time of year – under normal conditions – would be to stay at home, relax on the sofa and get comfortable with your fill of movies and TV series. But considering that, due to the pandemic, we have already been doing it for ten months, even this kind of pleasure is probably already over for some time!
At the base of a possible melancholy there could rather be a physiological cause, determined by the low level of serotonin present in our body, a natural chemical substance that affects psychophysical well-being, regulating sleep, appetite and mood. On the darkest and dullest days, the so-called “good mood hormone” is in fact produced in smaller quantities than on days when the sun shines.
But should we prepare ourselves for the idea that on the third Monday of January we will most likely experience a day full of sadness?
“Of course not. If we let ourselves be conditioned by negative thoughts, we will change our perception of things ”, explains the psychologist Chiara Crivelli. “Sometimes we make “prophecies” come true: if we fixate ourselves on the belief that a certain day will be bad, maybe in the end it really will be. If we allow ourselves to be influenced by the idea that today is “Blue Monday” we would end up grasping only the negative emotions of this day. The best thing is to be objective: on Blue Monday – as well as on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and so on – there will be both negative and positive emotions. The point is to observe events in a somewhat detached way, to consider how in very beautiful days we have bypassed negative things, while in very bad days we have not given weight to the good moments. In other words: it is not external events that determine our day, but the way we place ourselves in facing it».
