The death of Bed Bath & Beyond Inc’s ( BBBY.O ) chief financial officer, who fell from New York’s Tribeca skyscraper known as the “Jenga” tower on Friday afternoon, was characterized suicidethe New York City Medical Examiner’s Office announced Monday.
This is 52-year-old Gustavo Arnal, whose suicide comes just days after the struggling company announced it was closing stores and laying off workers.
It also comes after Arnal and the company were sued on August 23 with accusations that it “artificially inflated the troubled home goods giant’s share price”. The company said it was “in the early stages of evaluating the complaint, but based on current knowledge it believes the allegations are without merit,” according to Reuters.
Arnal joined Bed Bath & Beyond in 2020. He previously worked as CFO for cosmetics company Avon in London and had a 20-year stint at Procter & Gamble Co ( PG.N ), according to his LinkedIn profile.
On Friday, following a call, police found a 52-year-old man dead near the building, who had suffered injuries from a fall. Police identified the man as Arnal. Bed Bath & Beyond confirmed his death in a statement Sunday, but did not provide details.
Last week, Bed Bath & Beyond announced it would close 150 stores, cut jobs and overhaul its merchandising strategy in an effort to reverse losses for its money-losing business.
