Beef exports from Brazil (in natura and processed) rose 17% year-on-year in January to 183,817 tonnes swt, driven by Chinese demand, but revenue grew at a slower pace on lower prices paid for the product shipped, he said. this Thursday (9) the Brazilian Association of Refrigerators (Abrafrigo).
Revenue from exports reached US$ 851.2 million in the period, an increase of 7% compared to January 2022, according to the entity based on data from the federal government.
This is because the average price of protein went from US$ 5,069 per ton in January 2022 to US$ 4,630 per ton last month, down 8.6%.
“The contract renegotiations that China has been promoting in its beef purchases was what most contributed to this reduction, leading to a drop in value from the US$ 6,204 paid (by the Chinese) per ton in January 2022 to US$ 4,845 per ton in January 2023”, warned the entity in the statement.
Imports from China represented 57% of the total volume exported by Brazil last month, with revenues of US$ 485.3 million and 100,164 tons purchased. A year earlier, the country had purchased 53,170 tons, with revenues of US$ 329.8 million, representing 41.3% of the month’s total.
The United States was the second largest buyer of Brazilian beef, despite having reduced its purchases. Revenue from sales to the country was US$ 79.7 million (-18%) for a movement of 15,296 tons (-11%).

In the pork market, Brazil exported 89.2 thousand tons in January, up 19.6% compared to the same period of the previous year, said this Thursday the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA).
In revenue, sector sales reached US$ 212.4 million this year, a performance 32.1% higher than that registered in January last year.
“The rise in shipments to China and Hong Kong attests to the permanence of demand for Brazilian products in the largest pork consumer market on the planet, maintaining the behavior seen in the second half of 2022, and which should continue in 2023,” he said in notes the director of markets at ABPA, Luís Rua.
China remains in the lead as a buyer with 41.6 thousand tons, up 32.5%, while Hong Kong imported 7.1 thousand tons (+5.5%).
