An unprecedented survey by Safras & Mercado, a leading Brazilian agribusiness consultancy, shows that demand for the country’s beef grew in the first months of 2022, compared to the previous year.
And, according to the projection, the expectation is that the trend will continue for the coming months. Exports in the first three months of 2022 grew by 30% compared to the first quarter of 2021.
The data were released last Tuesday (26).
Between January and March 2022, Brazilian beef exports rose for the third consecutive month. Likewise, the sector’s revenue grows for the same period.
In absolute terms, in March alone, Brazilian exporters of animal protein collected more than US$ 1 million.
“The dollar price will rise again and this is good for exports. Along with this, we noticed an increase in demand in the United States, where the population consumes a very large volume of beef”, emphasizes Fernando Iglesias, chief economist at Safras & Mercado.
“China, which represents almost 50% of Brazilian exports, also continues to be strong in terms of demand. And what can we also say that Brazilian cattle are the most competitive in the world, in addition to having a very large production capacity.”
Demand in Brazil is also growing. According to the consultancy, the increase in demand is related to the fall in the price of animal protein, due to the greater supply of the product on the domestic market over the last few months.
The study also shows that the slaughter of cattle is expected to grow, on average, 7% in 2022, when compared to last year. In March of this year, for example, the number of slaughters exceeded the average and grew by almost 10%, compared to the same month in 2021.
31 million head of cattle are expected to be slaughtered in 2022.
Simultaneously, the cost of chicken, a natural meat substitute, registers a rise in values in Brazilian markets in 2022.
“Chicken collects record prices in all categories in Brazil. We really see the cost of the product growing, which makes room for other proteins. In this scenario, beef, which has a slight downward trend in price, benefits”, highlights Iglesias.
