“Beetlejuice”: 5 reasons to watch Tim Burton’s sequel

The long-awaited sequel “The Ghosts Still Have Fun” from the 1988 classic “Beetlejuice” premiered in theaters this Thursday (5). Released almost 40 years later, the production brings back stars who were present in the original work, as well as references to the iconic work, such as costumes and sets.

The 1988 classic features a couple, Bárbara (Geena Davis ) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin ), who, after suffering a car accident, are left with their spirits trapped in their old home. When a new family and their teenage daughter, Lydia (Winona Ryder) move into the residence, the ghost couple tries, unsuccessfully, to scare the new residents, in order to make them leave.

The new story will show Lydia’s return to the house where her family was haunted in the original plot after a tragic event involving one of her loved ones. Accompanying her will be her daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), who will be responsible for finding a model of the city, built by the ghost couple in the 1988 story.

Below, the CNN who has already seen the film, lists reasons why you need to watch the continuation of the story.

5 reasons to watch “Beetlejuice”

Tim Burton’s style is more alive than ever

With more colors and even more visually rich scenarios of the “afterlife” environment, Tim Burton explores more of stop-motion, an animation technique that consists of taking several photos of inanimate objects to assemble the scenes, and brings his classic style, which involves the fantastical, dark and “gothic”, already seen in both the original production of Beetlejuice, as well as in works such as “Edward Scissorhands” and “Corpse Bride”.

Nostalgia and references to the classic

Tim Burton brings several references and similarities to the original plot in “Beetlejuice”, mainly in relation to sets and costumes.

Some of the highlights are the classic red dress worn by Lydia Deetz when she is forced to marry Beetlejuice, the striped clothes that are already popularly known about the ghost, the “afterlife” environment similar to the 1988 film and elements that return to the story, such as the model of the city and the places where the Deetz family lived.

Cast

Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara return to the sequel in their iconic roles, without losing the essence of the characters even almost 40 years after the first film. The film also gains the addition of Jenna Ortega (“Wandinha”, Scream 6″), Monica Bellucci (“Matrix”) and Willem Dafoe (“Spider-Man”, “The Lighthouse”).

The highlight is the interaction between Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega, two actresses who have already established themselves in the horror genre. The younger actress’s role, in fact, seeks to recall Ryder’s role 40 years ago.

Soundtrack and musical numbers

Although not classified as a musical, “Beetlejuice” has some moments of singing, which were intensified in the sequel. There is no such scene during a dinner, as in the 1988 classic, but there is a great scene with singing and dancing during the fictional wedding between Lydia and Beetlejuice.

Other musical numbers are distributed throughout the film. Another highlight is the nostalgic soundtrack, which features the same sound as the original at times.

More of the “afterlife”

The world of the afterlife, portrayed literally underground, features scenarios with elements already seen in the version from almost 40 years ago, but not only. In addition to these being even more developed in the current story, the plot features new locations and elements that have never been explored by the public.
