Before her debut in the US, Brazilian talks about representation on stage

The Brazilian dancer and activist Ingrid Silva debuts this Friday (19) in the cast of the play “O Quebra Nozes” in Washington, in the United States as the “Fada Açucarada”, one of the main roles in the production.

In an interview with CNN, she highlighted the importance of representation in the piece. “Not just for her, but for all the other girls who will be watching the show as well,” she explains, referring to her daughter Laura.

“Seeing someone who looks like them is a huge responsibility, and I’m so happy to be that person today.”

Silva says that he had dreamed of participating in the play “O Quebra Nozes” since he was a child. She says that it’s important to have this reference since she was little, but at the time it wasn’t seen in these shows. “I didn’t see anyone who looked like me.”

She also remembers her beginnings in dance, through one of the first social projects in communities in Rio de Janeiro, “Dançando para não Dança”. The dancer tells the importance of the project in social ascension and her trajectory in the book “A sapatilha que changed my world”.

TO CNN, Silva said that he only discovered the existence of dark pantyhose and sneakers, the color of his skin, when he joined an American dance company. In 2019, for the first time, she received a sneaker made with her tone.

“This was not just a victory, but it was a very big milestone, because my sneakers ended up in a museum in Washington, the Smithsonian. Two very important achievements”, he says.

The dancer emphasizes that her sneakers do not just represent her, but all the people who dreamed of being professional dance and did not have this opportunity.
