Backstage fight and direct attacks between Lula and Bolsonaro mark 1st TV debate

A backstage fight and direct attacks between the best-placed presidential candidates on the CNN/Locomotiva poll aggregator marked the first televised debate of the election race, held on Sunday night (28).

The meeting, organized by TV Bandeirantes in partnership with UOL, Folha de S.Paulo and TV Cultura, was attended by six presidential candidates: Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Ciro Gomes (PDT), Simone Tebet (MDB), Felipe d’Ávila (Novo) and Soraya Thronicke (União Brasil).

Shortly after the event began, federal deputy André Janones (Avante-MG), a supporter of Lula, and former Environment Minister Ricardo Salles, a supporter of President Bolsonaro, exchanged insults behind the scenes of the debate.

Throughout the televised clash, both Bolsonaro and Lula had the right of reply granted by the organizers of the debate after attacks they received from each other. The president was the first to react, after being criticized by the PT candidate for imposing a hundred-year secrecy on access to government information, including visits received by Bolsonaro at the Planalto Palace.

Jair Bolsonaro (PL) starts the week by participating, at 7 am, in a hearing held by Jovem Pan radio. Still in the morning, he returns to Brasília and participates in the Ceremony of Presentation of Credential Letters of the New Ambassadors.

Ciro Gomes (PDT) has only one campaign commitment this Monday: a meeting with members of Abdib (Brazilian Association of Infrastructure and Basic Industries), in São Paulo.

Simone Tebet (MDB) will have visits to social entities alongside her vice-president, Senator Mara Gabrilli (PSDB-SP), in São Paulo and, at 8 pm, she opens the series of interviews with the presidential candidates held by CNN.

Congress needs to vote on five Provisional Measures before elections

After more than 20 days without a plenary voting session, the Chamber of Deputies should resume, this Monday (29), deliberative activities in a concentrated effort. This happens due to the release of parliamentarians for the electoral campaign in the state bases.

And in the midst of this, there is an accumulation of provisional measures with a final deadline in this first week of September and in the last week, before election day, which takes place on October 2.

The president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), who is also a candidate for reelection, has already called a session for 5 pm this Monday to analyze these pending texts, but before that he must meet with leaders to define the daily agenda. After voting by the deputies, the provisional measures need to be discussed and voted on by the Senate.
