The first part of the long-awaited documentary series “Harry and Meghan” premiered on Netflix this Thursday (8). The second volume arrives on December 15.
In six episodes, the production explores the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s relationship: from the secret beginnings of dating to the challenges that made them feel the need to step away from their royal duties.
With unpublished testimonials from friends and family, as well as analyzes by historians about the current state of the Commonwealth and the relationship of the British royal family with the press, the series not only shows the love of a couple, but also portrays society and the way in which the next is treated.
Produced by the two-time Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning director Liz Garbus (“What Happened, Miss Simone”).
With a discreet release, without prior to the press, not much is known about the series beyond the trailers.
What is shown in the promotional materials
In the 50-second teaser released earlier this month, archival photos make up the soundtrack and the question is heard: “Why did you want to make this documentary?”
Prince Harry appears saying that “no one knows what goes on behind closed doors”. “I had to do everything I could to protect my family,” he says.
Then Meghan Markle speaks: “When the stakes are so high, doesn’t it make more sense to hear our story from us?”

In the trailer released a few days before the premiere, Harry begins by saying that “it’s very difficult to look back and think, ‘what happened?””.
The video brings public memories from the beginning of the relationship to when “everything changed”, as Meghan points out.
“There is a family hierarchy. You know there is leakage, but there are also stories planted”, says the son of King Charles III. “It’s a dirty game.”
Meghan speaks again and comments: “I realized that they will never protect me.”
Harry ends the trailer by saying, “Nobody knows the whole truth. We know the whole truth.”
What to expect from Harry and Meghan
The last time the Duke and Duchess of Sussex opened up about their relationship with other royals, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, the institution plunged into one of its biggest crises in recent times.
After the interview, Buckingham Palace promised to seriously address the issues they raised, while pointedly noting that “some recollections may vary”. William also said a few days later: “We are not a racist family.”
Many of the UK’s Sunday newspapers ran stories about the Netflix series, with some unnamed sources accusing the couple of declaring war on Windsor.
There is an expectation that the documentary series is a kind of “denounce” of the way the British monarchy acts and the way it treated Meghan Markle. As well as the press, which pursued and attacked the actress on several occasions.
Prince Harry, in interviews, has already compared his wife’s situation with that of Diana, his mother.
“I lost my mother and now I see my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces,” he said in 2019.
This subject should come up in production, as the trailer itself shows. “I was terrified. I didn’t want history to repeat itself,” says Harry.
