Beijing accuses NATO of “bullying” China during alliance summit

China’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday (11) that the United States needed to end “bullying” when asked about comments US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made at a NATO forum this week.

Blinken told the public forum in Washington on Wednesday (10) that the US was “approaching China from a position of strength at home” and through “greater convergence” with NATO and EU allies to counter “problems posed by China”.

“Bullying other countries by trying to increase their so-called strength is not in line with the trend of the times and will not receive support from the international community,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a regular press conference on Friday (12).

Blinken’s comments came after the NATO summit issued a statement on Wednesday (10) accusing China of being a decisive enabler of Russia’s war effort in Ukraine.

“On the Ukraine issue, the blame game has misled the international community, leading it to make irresponsible comments on China’s normal military development and its relations with relevant countries. China expresses its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to this,” Jian said.
