Beijing has told Moscow it will maintain an “impartial” stance on Ukraine

Its top diplomat China Wang Yi told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in a telephone conversation the two men had today that Beijing would maintain an independent and impartial stance on the Ukraine while trying to find a political solution to the war.

According to the announcement of the Chinese Foreign Ministry and as relayed by the Athens News Agency, Yi told Lavrov that China will be a “objective and logical voice” in any international multilateral forum and “actively promotes peace talks”.

Earlier today, the Chinese Foreign Ministry stressed that international talks in Saudi Arabia over the weekend to find a peaceful solution to the Ukraine crisis helped to “establish the international consensus”.

More than 40 countries, including China, India, the US and European countries – but not Russia – took part in the Jeddah talks which ended yesterday, Sunday.

China sent its Special Envoy for Eurasian Affairs and former ambassador to Russia Li Hui, who in May visited six European capitals with the aim of finding common ground for a final political settlement of the conflict, now in its 18th month.

Beijing has not condemned Moscow for the invasion it launched in February 2022. But it has offered its own peace planwhich received a lukewarm response in Russia and Ukraine while the US and NATO expressed caution.
