Wrecked this morning in her port Beirut the northern part of the silos – where grain is stored – after warnings that the facility was too tilted to be able to stand.
A large cloud of brown and gray dust rose over the waterfront, TV station LBCI reported. There are no reports of injuries so far.
The silos that collapsed today were the last of the northern section, while the southern section of the silos remains intact.
The huge explosion which had occurred on August 4, 2020 at the port had claimed the lives of more than 220 people. It had also caused extensive damage to the northern part of the grain silos, spilling wheat and corn onto the ground.
Recently a fire smoldered for weeks in the silos. Officials had said that the fire was a result of the summer heat that ignited the grains that had been left to rot, APE-MPE reports, citing Reuters.
Part of the facility had collapsed on July 31 and another part fell on August 4, on its second anniversary explosion.
The day before yesterday, Sunday, the Ministry of Health had announced that dust samples from various parts of the port showed that the air contains high amounts of moldwhich is not dangerous as long as it is not inhaled in large quantities over a long period of time.
