Beirut attack kills ‘about 10 Hezbollah commanders’, Israel says

Senior operations team officers and commanders of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan force were killed in an Israeli strike in southern Beirut on Friday (20), the Israeli military said.

Daniel Hagari, spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), said “about 10 commanders” were killed.

The army previously said Ibrahim Aqil, a senior Hezbollah military officer, was killed in the strike.

The Israeli military said Aqil and the commanders were responsible for a plan to attack and occupy communities in the Galilee in northern Israel and kill Israeli soldiers and civilians, comparing the alleged action to the October 7 attacks carried out by Hamas last year.

The army also accused Aqil of promoting or participating in other attacks against Israel.

“They were underground, under a residential building in the heart of the Dahya neighborhood, using civilians as human shields,” Hagari alleged at a press conference.

“They were coordinating terrorist operations against Israeli citizens,” he added.

There has been no confirmation of the deaths from Hezbollah.
