Belarus has become the first European country to approve the use of Soberana Plus, one of three COVID-19 vaccines developed in Cuba, the center that makes it announced Wednesday.
The Finley Institute of Havana announced via Twitter the “good news” that the Ministry of Health “approved the utilization of Soberana Plus”.
It is “the first European country to license a Cuban vaccine against COVID-19,” said the institute, which also produces another vaccine against the infection caused by SARS-CoV-2, Soberana 02.
This single-dose vaccine is recommended mainly for adults who are recovering from infection. It can also be used for the booster dose after two doses of Soberana 02.
Cuba, which has been making much of its vaccines since the 1980s, has developed three COVID-19 vaccines, Abdala and two Soberana, which it uses and also has in countries such as Venezuela, Nicaragua , Vietnam and Iran. None of its vaccines have been certified by the World Health Organization (WHO) to date.
To date, 90% of the 11.2 million Cubans have been vaccinated against COVID-19, and the number of cases has dropped dramatically in recent months. The toll of the new coronavirus pandemic on the Caribbean island is 8,529 dead out of a total of 1.1 million cases, according to official data.
