Belarus announced today that it will ban the import of food from many Western countries from January 1, in retaliation for sanctions imposed on Minsk, which is accused of orchestrating the immigration crisis at the European Union.
According to the decree of the Belarusian government, various products such as fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy products from the EU, Canada, the USA, Britain and other European countries will no longer be allowed to be imported into the country.
“Retaliatory measures have been taken, taking into account the West’s continued attempts to exert, collectively, illegal pressure by imposing sanctions on our country,” the government said.
The embargo will start on January 1 and will last for six months.
According to Minsk, Belarus, whose economy is based on the agricultural sector, imported food products worth more than $ 530 million in the first ten months of 2021.
The government clarified that the ban will not apply to certain items, such as baby food, so that “the interests” of Belarusian citizens are not harmed. “Importers, manufacturers and distributors are called upon to replace products not produced in Belarus with goods from friendly countries,” he added.
Russia has stopped importing food from the West since 2014, protesting sanctions imposed on it after the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.
