Belarus: EU wants to know Moscow’s intentions for flight cancellations

The European Union wants to know, before taking action, whether the obstacles created by Russia in air connections are specific to cases or whether it is a political decision, the head of European diplomacy announced today Josep Borrell, reports ΑΠΕ.

In the meantime, one of her flights Air France from Paris to Moscow was canceled today as Russia did not give the green light for a change of route so that the flight could avoid passing through its airspace. Belarus, became known by the company. The previous flight from Paris to Moscow was canceled for the same reasons the day before yesterday, Wednesday.

However, the Russia today allowed an Austrian Airlines flight from Vienna to Moscow to bypass the airspace of Belarus, as reported by the Russian news agency TASS citing a company statement. Russia yesterday refused to approve the same bypass for yesterday’s Austrian Airlines flight from Vienna to Moscow, canceling the flight.

Belarus: “There is always a risk of escalation with Russia”, commented Josep Borrell

The website of the Russian newspaper RBC Daily, however, reported late last night, Thursday night, that, despite the fact that yesterday Moscow denied access to the flight of Air France and that of Austrian Airlines, Russia is going to allow European flights to arrive and depart by bypassing Belarus airspace.

RBC Daily, citing a source close to the Russian Ministry of Transport, said that Russia will soon give official approval to flights to and from Moscow that bypass Belarus.

According to the same source, yesterday’s problems were due to technical reasons, as the new routes needed to be processed.

The Federal Aviation Administration of Russia, the Rosaviatsiya met yesterday, Thursday night, to discuss the permits, another source told RBC.

Rosaviatsiya was not immediately available for comment. The Ministry of Transport declined to comment.

The Russian diplomat also said today that the EU, by advising airlines to bypass Belarus, was behaving “irresponsibly”, which “endangers the safety of passengers”.

The closure of “hundreds of flights (…) creates colossal problems for citizens,” she said. Maria Zakharova on Facebook.

“It is time for Brussels to learn to take measures that are truly made for the safety of its citizens,” he added.

THE Josep Borrell “We had information about obstacles preventing European planes from taking off and landing in Moscow, which disrupted traffic,” he said today, arriving for a meeting with EU defense ministers in Lisbon. “But we still do not know if this is a measure taken on a case-by-case basis (…) or a general guideline by the Russian authorities to force European planes to fly over Belarus.”

“We are examining the situation, but we honestly have to wait and see to take action,” he explained.

“The risk of escalation is always with Russia,” said Josep Borrell.

Finally, Ukraine announced today, through the Ministry of Infrastructure, that from tomorrow, May 29, it will ban all planes registered in Belarus from using its airspace.

Kiev has banned flights to and from Belarus since Wednesday, after a Ryanair flight from Athens to Lithuania landed in Minsk at the weekend and the arrest of dissident Belarusian journalist Roman Pro.

“The government has toughened the ‘air sanctions’ on Belarusian planes,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Restrictions on flights to Belarusian airspace and transit flights by Belarusian companies are necessary steps to ensure the safety of aviation and passengers,” the Ukrainian Ministry of Infrastructure added.
