Belarus’ national carrier launches counter-attack on EU sanctions

The head of Belarus’ national carrier Belavia condemned today, calling the decision of its countries “disgraceful” The European Union to impose airspace restrictions on the company, after the forced landing of a passenger aircraft in Minsk.

Most of her neighbors Belarus and many other European states have banned Belavia flights following the forced landing of a Ryanair aircraft bound for Lithuania and the arrest of a dissident journalist on board.

The EU has proposed closing its airspace to state-owned Belavia and banning its aircraft from landing at EU airports.

In a post today on his Facebook page, Belavia CEO Igor Cerginets wrote that such steps amount to sanctions on the airline, which he described as innocent.

“It is obvious that these governments planned not only to close their countries for landing on our planes, but also, with a particularly fascist perversion, to close the runways one by one. “We are being ridiculed,” Cerginets wrote.

He himself criticized European governments for imposing restrictions before the International Civil Aviation Organization investigated the incident.

“All this is happening before an investigation into the incident, for which there may be some culprits, but Belavia is not among them,” he added.

“They are punishing innocent Belavia without even launching an investigation. It’s ugly. “
