Belarus: Opposition accuses President Lukashenko of ‘ultimate betrayal’

Exiled Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya today accused Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko of “ultimate betrayal” for “helping” Putin’s Russia launch an invasion of Ukraine.

“Russian military forces, with the help of the Lukashenko regime, have launched strikes on Ukrainian cities. These strikes have also been launched from Belarusian territory,” Tikhanovskaya told a news conference at the Lithuanian embassy in Lithuania. “This makes Belarus an attacking state” and “one of the sides in this armed conflict,” he added.

“It is a final betrayal and an act of betrayal against the interests of our people and the Republic of Belarus,” the opposition leader said, adding that Lukashenko “lost the right to speak on behalf of the Belarusian people.” “As of today, I take on the responsibility of representing the people and the Republic of Belarus,” said Tikhanovskaya, who is considered by Westerners to be the real winner of the August 2020 presidential election against ousted President Alexander Lukashenko.

“We are ashamed of the role our country is playing in this war,” Tikhanovskaya told the Ukrainians.

Paris today condemned Russia’s use of the territory of its neighbor and ally of Belarus to conduct military operations against Ukraine, and the European Union called on Belarus not to “take part” in the attack.

Ukraine announced that Russian ground forces had entered its territory from Russia and Belarus on Thursday morning.

According to the Ukrainian border guards, Russian military units entered the Kiev region today from Belarus, to attack Grad missiles at military targets.
