Belarus puts military on “high alert” after four Russian planes are shot down near border

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko confirmed on Monday that four military aircraft were shot down over Russia last week near the borders with Ukraine and Belarus, adding that the country had reacted by putting its armed forces on high alert.

The incident comes as Ukraine prepares for a counter-offensive against invading Russian forces.

Russian news outlet Kommersant reported on Saturday that a Russian strike group comprising a Su-34 fighter-bomber, a Su-35 fighter and two Mi-8 helicopters was shot down in an ambush near Klintsy in Russia’s Bryansk region. .

Kommersant said the aircraft would attack targets in Ukraine’s Chernihiv region, just across the border.

Russia’s state-run TASS news agency said on Saturday that a Russian Su-34 warplane had crashed, but did not specify the cause, and quoted emergency services as saying an engine fire brought down a helicopter.

TASS did not mention the Su-35 or a second helicopter, although several pro-war Russian military bloggers with large followings in the networks claim that all four aircraft were shot down.
