Belarus today released 52 detainees of various nationalities at the request of US President Donald Trump, and they are now on the right to Lithuania along with the US delegation negotiating their liberation, the US Embassy said. Trump had earlier invited Belarus President Alexander Lucashenko to release prisoners whom Trump described as “hostage”. Belarus later confirmed their release. In return, the US will lighten sanctions on Belarus’ National Airman, Belavia, allowing it to maintain and buy accessories for its fleet, including Boeing aircraft, a US Embassy spokeswoman in Vilnius said. It is the largest group of prisoners to be received by Lukashenko, who seeks to restore relations with the United States after years of isolation and sanctions against the former Soviet Republic.
