The sale of agricultural fertilizers to Brazil is suspended by Belarus, according to the country’s Embassy in Brasília. In a note sent to CNN this Tuesday (1), the Belarusian diplomacy says that the supply would have been interrupted because of a blockade made by Lithuania.
“Belarusian fertilizers occupy 20% of the market in Brazil and their supply has been interrupted due to the blockade of transit from Lithuania through its territory to the port of Klaipeda (Lithuania), which has historically been used to ship potassium fertilizers from Belarus to Brazil ”, says the Embassy of Belarus.
“The Lithuanian side banned transit under far-fetched political pretexts and declared that the transit of Belarusian potash fertilizers to Brazil, among other things, threatened Lithuania’s national security.”
According to reports made to CNN, The Ministry of Agriculture has been in contact since Thursday (24th) with exporters of the product and Brazilian diplomats to assess the impact of the conflict on the Brazilian trade balance. Brazil is the world’s largest importer, with about 13% of the entire volume purchased by the planet.
The fear is that the interruption of exports by Russia and Belarus will raise the price of the product, harming this year’s Brazilian crop. To avoid the scarcity scenario, the Brazilian government has discussed increasing imports from countries such as Canada and Iran, as it currently does not have enough stock in the country.
THE CNN awaits positions from the Ministry of Agriculture and Itamaraty.
