The State Control Committee, the National Bank and the government of Belarus want to “clarify some provisions of the legislation and establish the necessary level of control” over transactions with digital assets. President Alexander Lukashenko spoke about this at the meeting, local media write.
“The use of digital signs (tokens) and cryptocurrencies has become commonplace in many countries around the world. They are accepted as an additional means of payment along with traditional money, ”he said.
In this regard, many countries are developing rules to prevent money laundering, terrorist financing and exclude “preconditions for various kinds of criminal activity,” Lukashenko said.
Regulators of Belarus also intend to develop similar legislation.
In 2018, a decree came into force in the country, allowing HTP residents to carry out operations with cryptocurrencies, to operate as a crypto platform operator or an exchange office operator.
Later, the National Bank of Belarus, with the assistance of the FATF, approved the rules for regulating the cryptoindustry.
