Belarus: Trial of Sofia Sapega, partner of Belarussian opposition leader Roman Protashevich, begins

The trial of Sofia Sapega, Belarus’s Russian counterpart Roman Protashevich, who was arrested when Belarussian authorities forced the plane on board to land in Minsk, has begun in Belarus.

Sapega and Protashevich, the former editorial director of Nexta, a media outlet that played a key role in the 2020 uprising in Belarus following the re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko, were arrested in May 2021.

A MiG-29 fighter of the Belarusian army forced the Ryanair aircraft flying from Athens to Vilnius to land in Minsk.

Sapega is accused of inciting social hatred, resisting the authorities and illegally recording the personal data of police officers.

The 24-year-old woman, whose trial began today in Grodo in western Belarus, has agreed to cooperate with the investigation and has asked Lukashenko to release her. He faces up to six years in prison.

Shortly after the start of the proceedings, the court decided, at the request of the prosecutor, to continue the trial in camera.

Protasevic, who has lived in Europe since 2019, is currently under house arrest in Belarus awaiting trial.
