THE Belarus decided to host Russian tactical nuclear weapons, as announced today. For years, the country has been under pressure from the United States and its allies to change its political and geopolitical direction.
On Saturday, the Russian president Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow will seek to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in neighboring Belarus in the futureescalating the confrontation with the West.
The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs justified the country’s decision to cooperate with Russia in today’s statement, in which it emphasizes that Minsk is acting to protect itself from the West. “For the past two and a half years, the Republic of Belarus has received unprecedented political, economic and communication pressure by the United States, the United Kingdom and their allies in NATOas well as by the member states of the European Union,” the statement reads.
“Faced with these conditions and the legitimate concerns and risks in the sphere of national security arising from them, Belarus is forced to respond enhancing its security and defense capabilities».
Minsk maintains that Russia’s nuclear plans do not contradict international agreements on nuclear non-proliferation, as it itself Belarus will not control these weapons.
