Belarusian President Lukashenko pardoned 15 prisoners, on the eve of the presidential elections

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko pardoned 15 prisoners today in what Belarusian state media described as a humanitarian move, two days before presidential elections in the country that are expected to extend his 31-year rule . Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is tipped to secure a new five-year term in Sunday’s election. The exiled opposition says the election is a fraud as all its major critics are in jail or have been forced to flee the country. State media reported that Lukashenko pardoned 8 people convicted of extremist activity and 7 convicted of drug-related crimes. The media did not name the people who were pardoned.
