Belgian justice minister resigns after judge ignores request to extradite Brussels terrorist

His Minister of Justice Belgium announced her resignation of, because a judge has put on record Tunisia’s request to extradite the Brussels terrorist in 2022.

Vincent Van Wickenborn noted that “this morning at 9 a.m., I noticed the following: on August 15, 2022, there was an extradition request from Tunisia for this man. This request was forwarded on September 1, as it should have been, by the legal expert to the Brussels public prosecutor’s office. The relevant judge did not respond to this extradition request and the file was not processed».

He emphasized that it is “individual error. A monumental mistake. An unacceptable mistake. A mistake with dramatic consequences. The independence of a judge is the foundation of our rule of law. I have always defended this principle and will continue to defend it. As Minister of Justice, I cannot under any circumstances interfere with the decisions of a judge.”

Although this is the work of a single and independent judge, I still want to take responsibility for this unacceptable mistake. I am not looking for any pretext at all. I’m not looking for excuses. I feel it is my duty to do so,” concluded Vincent Van Quickenborn.
