Belgium: Closes its ports to Russian ships from Sunday

As of Sunday, April 17, the access of Russian ships to the ports of Belgium is prohibited, according to the website of the television network rtbf.

The ban also applies to ships that changed the Russian flag after February 24, the date of the start of the invasion of Ukraine.

Any Russian ship that entered Belgium legally before the sanctions will still be able to leave the port. However, once he leaves, he will not be able to return.

The ban on Russian-flagged ships entering European ports is part of the EU’s fifth package of sanctions against Moscow, which was adopted on April 8th.

Nevertheless, there are exceptions for ships carrying gas and oil within the EU, as well as pharmaceutical, medical, agricultural and food products, including wheat and fertilizers. In addition, access may be granted for humanitarian purposes.
