The demonstration, called “Together for Freedom”, began around 3 p.m. (Greek time) at Bruxelles-Nord station. Protesters denounced measures restricting freedom, enforcing the “Covid Safe Ticket” health certificate and banning unvaccinated people from accessing places such as restaurants and bars.
According to information transmitted by the Belgian media, fireworks were fired at the police, before the water cannons and tear gas were fired by the Belgian authorities. Pictures posted on social media also show many police vehicles being vandalized.
The demonstration is subject to the approval of the City of Brussels and a route has been determined on the “rue de la Loi”, in the heart of the European institutions in Brussels. A podium was set up at the finish line for speeches.
“We denounce the measures that restrict freedom, which were not a structural solution for healthcare,” the organizers said in a statement. The motto of this mobilization is “Enough!”.
