Belgium: Epilogue in the “mega-trial” with more than 100 drug traffickers

Justice sentenced to 17 and 14 years in prison the two main defendants in a giant drug smuggling case in Belgium, a country that is a hub for cocaine smuggling in Europe. The trial, which took place in Brussels from December 2023 to May 2024, had an unusually large number of defendants: more than 120 men and women, to which were added four businesses suspected of serving solely to cover illegal activities. About 20 of them heard the verdict in handcuffs at the Justitia, the former NATO headquarters that has been converted into a court building for trials requiring heightened security. Among the defendants, who belonged to various nationalities – Albanians, Colombians, Belgians, Kosovars, Ukrainians or from the Maghreb – around 12 were being tried as the “head” of a criminal organization, among them the Algerian Abdelouahab Guerni.
