Belgium: Five builders were killed at a school construction site in Antwerp

Five builders died tragically in Belgium, after the collapse of a school building under construction in Antwerp.

According to the APE-MPE, The bodies of two builders, who were initially reported missing, were pulled from the rubble in the afternoon, the Antwerp fire brigade reported, which means that all the victims were located.

Belgian King Philip and Prime Minister Alexander de Croes visited the scene of the accident yesterday.

Among the five victims, one was from Portugal and another from Romania, police told local media, while the nationalities of the other dead workers were not identified.

The builders were working for a subcontractor of the construction company Democo, according to the Belga news agency.

“All employees are devastated,” said Frederic Biznen, CEO of Democo. “Now that the emergency services have done everything they can, a full investigation will be launched to determine the causes of the accident,” he added.

Nine more people were injured in the accident which happened on Friday afternoon, three of whom are being treated in intensive care units, but their health is not in critical condition, the fire service said in a tweet.

As the school building is still under construction, there were no students present at the scene at the time of the accident.
