Belgium: Four seniors died after being offended by E.coli bacterium in retirement homes – 20 people in total

The Belgian authorities are investigating the origin of an E.coli bacterium infection, which is likely to be responsible for the deaths of four elderly people in a nursing home, as it became known today by the Flemish Welfare and Health Service. A total of 20 people have been ill at six Flanders’ nursing homes since August 18th. Authorities are considering the possibility that infection is linked to their food. A spokesman for the service explained that these people had other underlying diseases and therefore “it is currently impossible to say whether the bacterium caused their deaths or if it has been infiltrated”. Health services have said that the research on the origin of the epidemic focuses on companies supplying the six nursing homes, on the outskirts of Luven, Aloost and Antwerp. Laboratory analysis shows that the same type of bacterium is responsible for all infections “which shows that there is a common source”, the Flemish Health Service underlined in their joint announcement.
