An increase in cases of the new coronavirus, but a decrease in the number of patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU) and deaths due to COVID-19 show the data published by the Belgian health authorities.
An average of 11,778 SARS-CoV-2 infections were confirmed during the day between December 27 and January 2, up 82% from the previous week, according to the Sciensano Institute of Health.
On Monday, January 3rd, 27,199 cases were confirmed in 24 hours.
Hospital admissions averaged 169 per day between December 30th and January 5th (+ 28% compared to the previous week). 1,882 patients with COVID-19 are still being treated, including 470 in the ICU (–17%).
Between December 27 and January 2, deaths due to complications of COVID-19 averaged 23 per day (-26%).
A total of 8,803,511 residents of Belgium (88% of adults) had been fully vaccinated by 3 January, while 4,572,365 (49% of adults) had received a third, booster dose, according to official figures.
