Belgium: Nightclub closure and teleworking considered

The closure of nightclubs where distances can not be observed, as well as teleworking until Christmas, is expected to be proposed to the Belgian government by the Committee for Coronavirus experts, according to today’s publication of the French-language newspaper “Le Soir”.

The Belgian committee of experts proposes either the closure of the nightclubs or the entrance to them with a “self test” for the vaccinated and with a PCR test for the unvaccinated. The measure may last for 3-4 weeks and then the entrance to these stores will be done only with a certificate of vaccination or recovery. The number of guests at weddings and other social events is proposed to be limited to 50 people, while the general reduction of social contacts is also proposed. In addition, the panel of experts is expected to propose the mandatory use of a mask from the age of 9 (compared to the current 12 years), as the goal is to keep schools open until the Christmas holidays. Cinemas, theaters and other entertainment venues will remain open, however it will be mandatory to use the mask and enter with the “CovidSafeTicket” health certificate. The Commission will propose intensifying third-dose vaccinations for people over 65 and those in vulnerable categories. Christmas shopping will work, but entry will only be allowed with the CovidSafeTicket demo. Finally, the most important measure proposed is the compulsory teleworking until Christmas in order to decongest the means of transport and reduce social contacts.

The proposals of the committee of experts will be discussed at the meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Belgian Government, which will meet on 17 November.

Meanwhile, Belgian Health Minister Frank Vadenbruke told the Flemish television network VTM News on Sunday that “the psychological milestone of the 500 patients with Covid in the intensive care unit has been exceeded”. “There are 516 people in the intensive care unit,” said the health minister, noting that Belgium has a total of 2,000 intensive care beds, but 117 of them are not used due to lack of staff. According to Vadenbrueck, there is an urgent need to implement more strict measures to combat the coronavirus. He also said he was watching the experiment at the Oude Markt in Leuven, where there would be a checkpoint where people would have a bracelet that would allow them to enter the restaurant.

The “Covid Safe Ticket” will no longer be enough to keep the nightclubs open, the health minister said, noting that in his view nightclubs should only accept people who have been vaccinated.
