The Belgian Foreign Ministry terminates the mission of its ambassador to South Korea after his wife attacked a woman in Seoul. It is reported by the BBC.
CCTV footage of the incident shows Peter Lescouche’s wife, Xiang Xueqiu, beating a salesperson who wanted to verify that the clothes she was wearing were her own and not from a store.
The incident occurred on April 9 at a clothing store in Yongsang, Seoul.
Xiang Xueqiu, 63, tried on clothes for about an hour, South Korean media reported. However, she was wearing clothes from the same store. When the ambassador’s wife went out into the street, the seller followed her to make sure she hadn’t stolen her clothes.
The Belgian Foreign Ministry said Xiang Xueqiu met with store employees and apologized for her “inappropriate behavior.”
However, Belgian Foreign Minister Sophie Vilmes decided this summer to terminate Lesquier’s powers after three years in office.
“Peter Lescouche has been the Belgian Ambassador to the Republic of Korea for the past three years. At one time, he contributed to a very successful state visit in March 2019. However, it became clear that the current situation does not allow him to continue to calmly carry out his duties,” Belgian Foreign Ministry post on Facebook.
The ambassador’s wife reportedly initially used diplomatic immunity to avoid accusations of the attack, but the Belgian government dropped it so the South Korean police could investigate.
