Belgium: Second day of heat in the country with the mercury reaching 40 degrees

Today is the second hot day for Belgium with the thermometer expected to exceed 39 degrees in Brussels and the Royal Meteorological Institute has put the country on orange alert. The mercury is expected to reach 40 degrees in the west and southwest of the country.

Yesterday, Monday, the mercury at the Royal Meteorological Institute in the area of ​​Uccle, showed 33.7 degrees surpassing the previous record of 2006 when the thermometer had reached 33.6 degrees. The temperature was even higher in regions of Flanders. In Beitem it reached 35.2 points. Some shops, mainly bakeries or local shops decided to operate fewer hours on the two days of the heat wave.

Also, in some areas such as the city of Fleurus in Wallonia, the authorities distributed fans to the citizens, while in the Antwerp zoo they cooled the animals with frozen treats.
