Belgium will further increase military spending in 2022

The Belgian government agreed a few hours before a special NATO meeting on the war in Ukraine to increase its defense spending by one billion euros, in addition to the 10 billion euros it has already set aside for this purpose, according to the Belgian newspaper. L ‘Echo.

The aim is to strengthen Belgium’s defense by 2030, including developing a cyber security unit in the Belgian army, renewing fuel and ammunition stocks, defense equipment and supplies, and improving intelligence services and communications systems, the paper said.

NATO countries should devote more than 2% of their GDP annually to defense spending. Belgium currently spends 1.2% of its GDP, while with this additional aid the percentage will reach 1.54%.

At the same time, the Belgian army – which currently numbers about 25,000 troops – also wants to add 2,500 additional members in 2022.
